What to see in Pärnu
Pärnu (in German: pernau; in Russian: ярну) It is a city located southwest of the country, on the banks of the Gulf of Riga, and capital of Pärnu County. This is the fourth most inhabited city of the Republic of Estonia with about 47,000 inhabitants, and is recognized as the main holiday destination in the country by its white sand beach, the spas and the Pärnu River that crosses the historic center.
Before its official foundation, there were examples of settlements on the banks of the Pärnu River that according to the City Council date back to the Millennium IX before Christ. The Al-Brisi cartographer came to mention the existence of the "Bernu River" in the Rogeriana tabula.
1251 is established as the official Date of Foundation: The Bishop of Ösel-Wiek inaugurated that year the Villa de Perona or Alt-Pernau in the right margin of the Pärnu River, destroyed shortly after. In 1265, the Knights of the Livone Order founded the town of Embeke or Neu-Pernau on the left margin and on it built a fortress. The city became the fourteenth century in the enclave of the Hanseatic route to Nóvgorod.
